The children sang one of the songs from our show called 'There's no Place Like Home' (which Mrs Murphy Phelan had changed some of the words to fit in), for Carlos and they made cards for him. Raises its Tenth
Green Flag!

St Brigid's Crossbridge N.S. Celebrates with a Flag Raising Ceremony!

Our children in Fifth and Sixth Class led by their teacher Ms Meunier spearheaded the initiative throughout the whole school. The theme was Global Citizenship and Sustainable Travel. They managed to get everyone on board and were responsible for the introduction of W.O.W (Walk on Wednesday) for the whole school year. We had Scoot on Wednesday, and Scooting Skills,  we celebrated National Bike Week. They did surveys on topics such as 'Car Idling' and Air Pollution and they even used a speed gun one day to log the speed of cars passing the school. They also carried out a weekly competition among the classrooms to see which classroom was the most environmentally friendly for the week. They looked at things like recycling paper and plastic, turning off taps and lights, picking up litter, telling others about being green, walking/cycling/scooting to school. We are so proud of them for showing great leadership skills and the rest of the children in the school for getting so involved. We had a really lovely ceremony where a lot of our parents were able to join us and we had guest speakers to say a few words to the children. We also had Lucy Mulhall as a special guest to help us raise the flag. Lucy remembered raising our first one many years ago. She spent loads of time with them and signed autographs for any of the children who wanted them. She also gave an inspirational talk to the children and left with them with the message - "look after the people around you and surround yourself with good people." She promises us she will be back to take a P.E. lesson with them. We will look forward to it!

Our children and staff don't let a bit of rain ruin their partial walk to school on a Wednesday! As most of our children are not able to walk the whole way to school due to the danger of the roads around our school, our Green Schools committee introduced W.O.W (Walk on Wednesday) to help fulfil the 'Travel' part of their Green Schools theme this year - Global Citizenship and Travel. It helps us all to remember to use greener methods of travel whenever we are able to.

A Mass for Peace and a Fundraiser for the People of Ukraine

Thanks to Covid19, we hadn't been able to have a school Mass in over two years. The children wanted to give thanks for all the frontline workers during Covid, to remember the people who had died, to celebrate the fact that everyone rallied together to get through Covid and then most especially to pray for peace. They put on their thinking caps and came up with a Mass that covered everything. The children of Fifth and Sixth Class wrote all the Prayers of the Faithful themselves, they decided what they would like to bring up as gifts and they picked the hymns that they would like to have sung at the Mass. We decided to incorporate a fundraiser for the people of Ukraine into the day. We were going green for Seachtain na Gaeilge and so we decided that everyone would bring in money for wearing their green. We also had buckets at Mass to take any other donations. The children in Fourth Class went all out decorating the buckets. A child from each class, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, read a Prayer of the Faithful and another child from each class brought up a gift. All of the readings were done by the children. Fr Gahan very kindly said the Mass especially for us. All parents were welcome to attend. We are so proud of all our children and we are delighted to have raised €396.70 for the people of Ukraine. We have sent this on to the Irish Red Cross. A huge thanks to everyone for their generosity.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit!

Seachtain na Gaeilge

We had a great two weeks leading up to St Patrick's Day for 'Seachtain na Gaeilge'. The children took part in Irish dancing, songs and poems in our native language. They looked at Irish stories and 'Seanfhocail' and illustrated them to show their meaning. They learned their National Anthem and spoke as much Irish as they could throughout the couple of weeks. We finished the couple of weeks off by turning the school green. The children all wore green to school and decorated their classrooms with as much green as they could find! We had a Mass for peace and sang some Irish hymns. We had a little Céilí outside and finished our day with a Tráth na gCeist. Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh go léir!

World Book Day 3rd March 2022

Dressing up for World Book Day!

There was great excitement throughout the school when the doors opened this morning. A whole different set of characters had come to school! We had a great day hearing about everyone's favourite books and everyone's favourite character in their books. We got to listen to some real life authors and also some illustrators who gave a few tips on how to do some drawings. Ideas for books were discussed, book covers were designed, children drew their favourite book covers and children drew some characters from published books. Every child left school with their free book voucher which will allow them to get a free book in their nearest book store.

RTE NEWS2DAY COMES TO CROSSBRIDGE!

There was huge excitement in the Senior Room when the crew from News2Day on RTE2 paid a visit on the 15th February. The children were hard at work planting some of the two hundred trees on the school grounds when the crew arrived. They filmed the children planting the trees and they also interviewed some of the Sixth Class pupils who, along with the previous SIxth class won the Green Schools/An Táisce 'Outdoor Classroom Project'. Their prize was to have the little wood planted on the school grounds with space to have an outdoor classroom within the setting. We can't wait for the programme to air! Well done to all the children involved, including the children from the other classrooms who were also involved in the planting of the trees. We are very proud of all of them.

Celebrating our Past Pupils

We were absolutely delighted and so proud to welcome back some of our past pupils and their team mate to celebrate their win in the Leinster Cup Final in Camogie from Knockananna Camogie Club. The children sang a song for them and got to hold the cup and meet the players. Our children, the future players and hopefully future winners, were able to get inspiration from these wonderful players! They were also very impressed when the visitors requested an extra five minute break for them! We wish them every success as they go on to play the semi final of the All Ireland! Go Girls!!!

Celebrating St Brigid

Our school celebrates St Brigid's Day every year as this is who our school is called after. The children listened to stories about St Brigid and heard how kind and generous she was. They also heard how strong and independent she was. The older children made some St Brigid's crosses. both with rushes and with paper.

Fundraiser for
St Vincent de Paul

The children in the Sacrament classes decided to help St Vincent de Paul for their fundraiser this year. They all brought in an item to create a hamper which they could raffle within the school. They were so generous and brought so many things in, that we ended up with two hampers and some bottles as prizes too. We had five prizes altogether in the end. We are so proud of them. They then sold the tickets to the rest of the school and to themselves and thanks to the great generosity of our parents, they managed to raise €322 for our local St Vincent de Paul. A big well done to everyone involved!

Our very own Author!

We are so proud of Maria in the Middle Room who became a published author with the publication of the book, 'The Book of Tomnafinnoge'! Maria took part in workshops held in the Court House and her fantastic story is one of the stories published. We will look forward to buying her books in the future! Keep up the great work Maria!

Turn the School Blue for Diabetes Day!

We turned our school blue for Diabetes Day. Everybody wore something blue to school to celebrate the day. We learned about Diabetes and we were really lucky to hear first hand from Heidi, one of our pupils, what it is like to live with Diabetes every day. She gave a great talk to each classroom and allowed all the children to ask her questions about Diabetes. We also heard how it is 100 years since Sr Frederick Banting and his team discovered insulin which is helping to change the lives of people with Diabetes to this day. We also raised money for 'Diabetes Ireland' thanks to all our families donating on the day. We raised €118.70. Well done to everyone and a huge thank you to Heidi, our pupil who has been living with Diabetes since she was three, for sharing all her knowledge with us.

Credit Union Art Competition

Tuesday 2nd November - We received great news in the post! Laura in Fifth Class was the winner in the school prizes category for our school. This is not Laura's first time to win in this competition! She has been successful many times. We are very proud of her. There was no presentation this year due to Covid19 and so Laura's teacher presented her with her prize and certificate from Baltinglass Credit Union, in front of the whole school. Well done Laura!
